Louis XIV period marquetry chest of drawers decorated with a Ducal Crown circa 1700

An exceptional piece of furniture with this unique commode circa 1700, with a curved front opening to four drawers on three rows.

Our commode features superb inlaid walnut, thuja, ash, sycamore, elm, and ebony fillets. The wooden top is richly inlaid with scrolls, with a medallion bust in the center. The rounded jambs are richly inlaid with medallions in reserve, fleur-de-lys, and stylized letters, and feature straight legs. The drawers are inlaid with scrolls and ducal crowns in filleted frames. The sides are inlaid with Basque crosses and inverted Basque crosses. The inlaid apron and inlaid uprights with a monogram, are certainly an indication of the commode's owner circa 1700. Drawer frames and bottoms in fir. Very fine and rare period locks with functional keys, and drop handles with ormolu foliage supports.

This magnificent Louis XIV period commode is like no other in its marquetry and craftsmanship quality.

Sizes: H 32.28 Inches. - W 51.18 Inches. - D 25.59 Inches.

In excellent condition, our chest of drawers has been varnished in our workshops.

The Basque Cross or Lauburu:
Lauburu (4 heads in French), is made up of four commas, joined together to form a cross.
The comma, a solar symbol, has been found in many regions and cultures since antiquity: Gaelic, Celtic, and Greek crosses...
The inverted cross is also found in cemeteries, where its meaning is peace, whereas its original meaning is a solar symbol.
