At the same time as issuing the certificate, the Mario Sironi Archive suggested a reference to a work donated to FAI by Claudia Gian Ferrari. This brief extract describes some characteristics of the donated painting kept at Casa Necchi Campiglio, Milan (MI) :
"... The `Peripheries' and `Urban Landscapes' are among the most significant series by Mario Sironi, one of the most important 20th-century cantors of the city. There are no traces of human presence other than the architecture itself. These were Sironi's Milanese years, in which he cooperated in the founding of Novecento, for the return to a clear, legible, universal art; indeed, it was Margherita Sarfatti, the group's critic, who recognised the classicism of his landscapes from the columns of "Il Popolo d'Italia" on 10 April 1919: "The quality of his greys is of a sharp novelty, and at the same time soft and balanced in the value of the tones, which I do not hesitate to define as classical. The palette of this suburb, as of most urban landscapes, is muted, made up of greys and browns. The suburban landscape thus becomes a metaphor for man himself, a tragic, harsh and silent presence, full of loneliness but at the same time grandiose."
