Timo Sarpaneva (1926-2006) was inspired by nature, as evidenced by many of his works. The influence of nature can also be seen in the "Arkipelago" series designed by Sarpaneva for Ittala in the late 1970s. The works in this series are inspired by the harsh Finnish nature which at the same time possesses a certain softness. The name of the Arkipelago series refers to the Finnish archipelago of Åland.
