Contemplative watercolor by English painter Sir James DROMGOLE LINTON (1840 - 1916), depicting a Mary Stuart dreaming of escaping from her island prison of Loch Leven, inspired by Sir Walter Scott's novel narrating the Queen's exile. The watercolor was probably exhibited for a dedicated salon around 1890-1891, an assumption underlined by the name engraved on the original marie-louise. Its resplendent state of freshness and the fact that it once passed through the Thomas Agnew gallery are further testimony to its quality in the purest English taste.
