Boatman from the Brière Nature Park stylized as a Styx ferryman
Charcoal
29.5 x 35 cm out of frame
Small accidents on the edges
Framed
The garb, the pointed boat, the gaff and the landscape indicate that this is a scene inspired by the common means of transport to get around the Brière marshes near Saint-Nazaire and Guérande, but the symbolist spirit transforms this simple ferryman into a mannerist nocher of the underworld. A skilful draughtsman with a very assertive style, handling his charcoal in long, sharp strokes and opposing each other in a disturbing form of dance.
