A typical example of a late Louis XIII draughtsman/engraver in the vein of Huret and Callot. Drawn with a firm line contrasted by the effects of the wash, this homage to Saint Denis can be compared with the works of Nicolas Cochin, an artist from Troy renowned for his inventiveness. He was greatly influenced by De La Bella and Callot, whose decapitation scene in the background is a reworking of his Saint Livier. The stylus passage bears witness to the existence of an engraving that now seems to have been lost.
