Jean-Baptiste BROSSEAU, is a 19th century Martinican sculptor born in Saint-Pierre in 1840. He was a student of the famous sculptor Jules Jacques Labatut and worked in Paris on rue Lauriston in the 16th arrondissement. This work was exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1913 as evidenced by the old label on the back (see photo). We clearly find its trace in the salon catalog, Explanation of works of painting, sculpture, architecture, engraving, and lithography of living artists exhibited at the Palais des Champs-Elysées, Society of French Artists, 1913 (1914), p. 292, n°3244. It is mentioned as being the “portrait of Mr. B…”
