"Kubachi Kindjal From Dagestan"
The “Kindjal” or “Khandjali” is a type of double-edged dagger found mainly in the Caucasus regions and Central Asia. The “Kindjal” is, depending on its origin, often decorated with precious metals such as ivory, silver or gold. The blades are generally made from high quality steel with a variety of fullers, some of which are made of a twisted core steel pattern. Although most blades are smooth and polished, we also encounter examples with strong chiseled blades. This example: from Dagestan, currently classified as an autonomous region of Russia. Dagestan is a mountainous region located next to Georgia and the Kaspian Sea. During the period of manufacture of this dagger, at the end of the 19th century, in Dagestan. was under Russian control after decades of Persian and Mongol influence. The dagger shows craftsmanship that we generally determine to be from the Kubachi region. The Kubachi region is a rather small area where silver craftsmanship was highly prized due to the silver mines in this region which were exploited for centuries.
The handle: Typical in shape, slim and with an elegant middle section. The handle is decorated with a very fine silver inlay/overlay of arabesque foliage designs within a thick silver inlay. The facade has two similarly decorated mitres. The back of the hilt shows two Azhi dragons of Persian influence in silver, rampant.
The blade: Double-edged with a medial ridge running across the entire blade and ending in a slightly fluted point. Finished in a high polish. The scabbard: The metal scabbard is decorated with a fine arabesque pattern in silver inlaid with five emerging Ahi dragons on the back. The front shows a cartouche with an ornamental cross.
Excellent condition, minor ware on the silver.
