"Society Archipelago, Island Of Tahiti, Early 20th Century, Gray Basalt Pestle."
Society Archipelago, island of Tahiti, early 20th century, very pretty pestle, penu in Tahitian, in gray basalt whose function was to reduce the pulp of fruits and tubers to a paste on wooden crushing boards or tables “papahia”. This “penu” was sculpted from a block of stone then cut with an adze to roughen it and finally finished in its final form by a long process of abrasion. The top part is decorated with a phallic motif. The lower part is the perfect shape for its use. Wear around the edges confirms age and confirms regular use over a long period.
Height 19.5 cm. Width 13.9 cm. The scale indicator in the last photograph is a small model of a lighter from a brand known to everyone. Good condition. Normal wear and tear contributing to the beauty of the piece.
