"Left Hand Dagger With Ring, Finely Chiseled Probably Worn Hunting"
This is a beautiful, elegant ring dagger dating from the second half of the 17th century. His style already foreshadows the shapes that would be fashionable at the beginning of the 18th century. It most likely belonged to a hunter, since the decor shows us two representations of hares, as well as two of hunting dogs.BLADE: after a short ricasso of 9mm, it takes on a hexagonal section whose edges are a little worn. The two cutting edges continue harmoniously to form the point.
Length of the blade = 25.7 cm, width at the ricasso = 2 cm, thickness at the ricasso = 6.7 mm
GUARD: It is a so-called “ring” guard, this one being finely chiseled. The quillons are straight, twisted and end in flattened balls called "Turkish turbans".
POMMEL : it is spherical and twisted, and topped with a small button on which the tang of the blade is riveted. The upper part of the pommel, around the button, is worked in the shape of a flower.
HANDLE: it is made of steel, chiseled with plant scrolls, and 2 representations of hares, and 2 representations of hunting dogs (or foxes?)
The whole weapon has a homogeneous patina, which I preferred to keep, but the the appearance can be easily improved by lightly polishing the handle.
