The box is rectangular in shape with scalloped edges.
The hinged lid is decorated with a scene to identify presenting three characters. The first is standing in the center and holding a spear. The second on the right makes or unpacks a package. The last one, on the left, seems prostrate.
This scene is framed by curves and counter-curved rockeries.
The bottom of the box represents a loving couple in a forest landscape, all framed by the same curves and counter-curves.
The sides are engraved with flowers and foliage.
The box is hallmarked:
. Charge mark for small silver works between 1756 and 1762: a portcullis
. Letter date difficult to read, perhaps a crowned T, for the year 1759
. Discharge mark for small silver works between 1756 and 1759: a shell
. French control mark posterior to the swan.
Superb and rare silver snuffbox from the mid-18th century, the decor is still rocaille but we sense a softening which marks the period of symmetrized rocaille, following criticism such as the famous Supplication to the goldsmiths of Cochin, published in 1754.
