Pen drawing, watercolored and enhanced with gouache by Maurice Orange, representing a Drum Major of the Grenadiers under the First Empire.
The scene shows him, accompanied by two drums, as he speaks to a sapper.
The overall composition, uniformological precision and richness of colors and contrasts are characteristic of the works of Maurice Orange. They made his reputation.
The painting is signed Maurice Orange at the bottom left. It is presented under glass in a gold frame. On the back appears, in pencil, the words "Maurice Orange 1868 1916 - Pen, watercolor, gouache".
Maurice Orange: French painter and designer born March 9, 1867 in Granville and died February 28, 1916 in the 7th arrondissement of Paris. He quickly revealed a talent for drawing and his first teachers encouraged him to enroll at the École des beaux-arts in Paris. He became friends with Édouard Detaille. He specializes in history painting and in particular in the Napoleonic epic. He received medals and travel grants. The discovery of Spain, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Africa and especially Egypt provided him with his sources of inspiration. He uses all techniques: oil, watercolor, gouache, charcoal, pastel. He is a colorist renowned for his way of treating light.
