Object description :

"Alphonse Jovine (1930-1989) Saltimbanques In Aix En Provence"
The dreamlike and colorful universe of the painter Alphonse Jovine. A universe where good humor, tenderness, gentleness and poetry reign, oscillating between the strength and maturity of a true painter with a sure gesture and solid drawing, and the emotion, the sensitivity of the dreamy gaze of an adult who doesn't want to grow up. The work, in excellent condition, is presented in a modern American box-style natural oak frame which measures 47 cm by 55 cm and 27 cm by 35 cm for the canvas alone. Signed lower right, it is titled on the back and represents street acrobats in Aix en Provence.

Born April 3, 1930 in Marseille and died July 24, 1989 in Marseille. He studied Fine Arts 1948-1950? He lost his parents in 1951, the same year he left to do his military service, got married and had his first child (Christiane). It’s difficult to support a family from painting. He exercises his art in a nutritional way, he is a painter of letters: posters, storefront labels. His leisure time is occupied by painting and reading comics. He was a fan of American comics "Terry and the pirates" by Milton Canif, "Prince Valiant" by Harold Foster, "Dick Tracy" by Chester Gould, "Tarzan" by Burn Hogarth (whom he met several times) and in his youth "Mickey". Provencal painter with a naive or falsely naive style... His taste for comics, the study of graphics and colors were not without influence on his painting and in particular on the characters. In the 60s he frequented the bar "Le Peano" Cours d'Estienne d'Orves in Marseille where he met a certain number of painters and artists with whom he was linked: Ambrogiani, Quilici, Cousinou, Toursky... At this time he received the first painting prize from the city of Marseille. He had a few exhibitions in Marseille galleries: “L’atelier”, “Le Lacydon”… in the 70s and 80s. His father Étienne-Marius Jovine (1890-1951) was also a painter of letters and created many still lifes and Provençal landscapes.
