"Leon Gischia : “the Old 1933”"
Léon Gischia (1903-1991): “The old woman”, oil on canvas 65 x 50 cm, mounted in a flocked and patinated frame by the artist 81 x 67 cm (wear). A tear on the upper left and a chip on the left hand. Provenance, Basque collection, previously acquired from the painter. Little known to the general public, Gischia is nevertheless a major artist of post-war Young Painting, both through his immense work and his writings on the History of Art, his actions such as the creation of the Salon de Mai or as a theater designer, notably with Jean Vilar. Born in Dax to an Italian father and a Landes mother, after an American interlude, he settled in Venice where he spent a good part of the year. Our painting, representing an old Landes woman with a wrinkled face (her grandmother?), dated 1933, is from her first period, figurative but modern where the influence of her master Othon Friesz can still be felt.
