"Chair"
Tom Dixon, born in Tunisia in 1959, is an internationally recognized British designer. He began his studies at Chelsea College of Art and Design but dropped out before graduating. What follows is a most atypical journey. He becomes a guitarist in a rock band and works in a nightclub at night. During the day, he learned welding in a garage. His career began with the creation of furniture and sculptures from recycled metal that he recovered from the port of Chelsea. Twenty years later, he became artistic director of the Habitat firm, and embodies the success of a self-made man. In the meantime, his S-chair has made him a recognized designer. At the head of his own firm, he creates objects in a neo-industrial spirit which reflects his taste for raw materials and craftsmanship. His creations earned him the Maison&Objet designer of the year award in 2014. His works have also entered various museums, such as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the MoMA in New York and the Center Georges Pompidou in Paris. At the same time, he has been an honorary doctor of the University of Birmingham since 2004 and of the University of the Arts London since 2007.
