“The Port-Berteau group” This is the name given to the outdoor workshop founded by Corot, Courbet (1819-1877), Auguin (1824-1903) and Pradelles (1824-1913), which regularly arises in Mantes la Jolie in 1862 and 1863. From this work will emerge 173 paintings which will be exhibited at the town hall of Mantes in January 1863. Our painting is related to this period, not only with regard to the subject but also by the technique and manner used which correspond to Corot's painting of the years 1860/1865. Among many others, we can mention: The dancers of Castel-Gondolfo; the pond with three cows, a souvenir of Ville d'Avray; landscape with the setting sun (museum of the city of Grenoble)... Our work is of very good quality even if a few “details” prevent us from proposing an attribution to the Master, notably in the somewhat different color palette and in the touch of the The artist here a little too much thought, less spontaneous than that of Corot. We therefore offer this beautiful painting as a workshop work. The signature is not apocryphal. Corot did not hesitate to retouch or rework the paintings of his students for educational reasons; we even know that he sometimes, to help some painters in poverty, sometimes signed their paintings (this is not the case for our work). Alfred Robaut listed all of Corot's paintings, 300 of which are now considered lost...)
