Object description :

"The Wounded Amazon, Neoclassical Marble 19th Century "
The Wounded Amazon, white marble sculpture based on the ancient marble exhibited at the Capitoline Museum in Rome.
Very beautiful neoclassical sculpture from the 19th century by a sculptor from a Roman or Florentine workshop.
Very good condition, no accidents or repairs.

The Wounded Amazon is a statue, a Roman copy which seems derived from a sculpture by Polykleitos. The original having been made in the second half of the 5th century BC. BC in Athens, but it is only known from Roman examples, the most beautiful being in the Capitoline Museums in Rome. Subsequent to the Doryphorus, the statue was created on the occasion of an order issued by the Sanctuary of Artemis of Ephesus, around 435 BC. BC, putting Polycleitos, Cresilaus and Phradmon in competition. Pliny the Elder tells us that the winner was Polykleitos, followed by Phidias (the third being Kresilas, and the fourth Phradmon).
