Renato Italo Birolli (Verona, December 10, 1905 - Milan, May 3, 1959) was an Italian painter.
After studying at the Academy in Verona, he moved to Milan, where, at the age of only 23, he immediately joined an avant-garde group along with Renato Guttuso, Giacomo Manzù, Aligi Sassu, Edoardo Persico and others.
In the first half of the 1930s he managed to create a very personal poetic world through what he called a figurative fabulation
After World War II, in 1947, he moved to Paris: here his evolution as a painter underwent a real turning point. Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso exerted a great influence on him, orienting him first toward post-Cubist type experiences, then toward a form of abstract lyricism.
In the 1950s he also came into contact with American action painting, but was not influenced by it. He achieved wide fame and is credited with numerous writings that are a testimony to his civic and artistic commitment.
