Emmanuel Frémiet (1824-1910) is best known for his monumental and animal sculptures. Elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1892, he succeeded Antoine-Louis Barye as professor of animal drawing at the Paris Natural History Museum.
He enjoyed considerable commercial success during his lifetime, and his works were widely reproduced.

On the edge of the plate is a silver lizard horn stamp and number 12. Only 94 examples struck in silver and distributed to members of the Société française des Amis de la Médaille Française.
