"Western Ivory Coast, Bété People, First Half Of The 20th Century, Superb Wooden Mask"
Western Ivory Coast, Bété people, first half of the 20th century, superb hardwood mask with dark brown patina of incredible modernity with the effigy of the spider. He presided over peacemaking ceremonies after armed conflicts. It provokes in those who look at it an emotional and aesthetic shock by the frontality of its surrealist construction but also respect and questioning by the feeling of inner power which emanates from this face. Part of a restricted corpus, it takes up the characteristics of the primitive iconography of the Bété masks (the visored forehead, the slit globular eyes and four converging and curved horns which frame the face).
Height 25 cm (42 cm with base). Width 14.4 cm. The scale indicator in the last photograph is a small model of a lighter from a brand known to everyone. Good condition except for normal wear and old restorations without impact.
