"Wood Engraved Xylographic Matrix 1848"
[REVOLUTION OF 1848]. GAILDRAU (Jules), Xylographic matrix for a scene from the Revolution of 1848 [Ca 1850]. Dimensions: 15 x 15 x 2.2 cm. Signature in the lower right corner and on the back, stamp of the Kieszling house in Paris, with the words "Deposited". Vertical slit approximately 5 cm in the middle of the block. Beautiful and large wood engraved representing the attack on the water tower post on the Place du Palais-Royal in Paris, February 24, 1848. This is a variation of a scene from the Revolution of 1848, including Jules Gaildrau gave several versions. The Carnavalet Museum preserves the engravings of two of these versions, one having served to illustrate the Illustrated Anecdotal History of the Revolution of 1848 by Lermina, Faure and Spoll (Paris, 1868), the other printed by Lemercier and distributed by Leclère. The water tower on Place du Palais-Royal was taken by insurgents and destroyed by fire during the Revolution of 1848.
