Michel Fronti 1862 - 1936 - 22x15.7 cm Landscape of Provence mountain background Saint Victoire? Michel Gabriel Joseph Toussaint Fronti is a French painter and pastel artist, born in Marseille on November 3, 1862 and died in the same city on September 20, 1936. Son of an artist, from his childhood, he showed an ardent vocation for painting. He followed the usual route of painters from the South: Beaux-Arts in Marseille (studio of Eugène Lagier), then in Paris (at Jules Lefèbvre and Benjamin-Constant). It didn't take long for him to make a name for himself in the artistic world. Member of the French Artists, he exhibited and obtained great success (silver medal in 1922) and numerous awards at various Salons. Back in Marseille, he found a place in the great family of artists, where his kindness and his smiling indulgence earned him multiple and faithful affections. Michel Fronti was honorary president of the Artistes de Provence and a member of the jury of the Marseille School of Fine Arts. The work of Michel Fronti, as a whole, testifies to a high artistic awareness, a very sure taste and, above all, a lively sensitivity. Pastellist, Michel Fronti demonstrates unusual virtuosity and leaves, to feeling, its full role in his work. He participated in the Salon des Artistes français from 1889 to 1935. Although his first submission was a painting (the Work of "Bouchée de pain à Marseille", in 1889, currently at the Musée des Beaux Arts in Marseille), he did not exhibit subsequently only pastels (Melle Harriet Strasy, from the Théatre de la Monnaie in Messaline, 1911). in 1920 (reclining woman, nude study, pastel) and a Silver Medal in 1922 with Indolence (pastel). Finally, he will also attend the Salon des Artistes Marseillais, then that of the Société des Artistes Provençaux. In Marseille, the Cantini Museum preserves several of his works: Le repos, Maison dans un jardin, Mme Maurice Hubert (1914). Victim of a traffic accident while walking in town, he finally succumbed to his injuries seven months after the incident, on September 20, 1936, aged 74. A boulevard in Marseille bears his name.
