"Otolaryngology Case"
Signed “Leiter, Wien”, c. 1880-1900, wooden case covered in brown chagrin decorated with filets, interior lined with purple velvet, nickel-plated metal instruments.
Elegant L.R.O. observation set including 1 front reflector mirror with central hole, articulated mirror on free-joint metal mount and headband, and a set of 5 round metal mirrors (three small and two larger) for rhinoscopic and laryngeal examinations, which fit onto a screw-on ebonite handle.
Engraved signature on the headband frame of Josef Leiter (1830 - 1892), a Viennese manufacturer of surgical instruments and apparatus, who apprenticed in Paris with the manufacturers Lüer and Charrière. Returning to Vienna in 1855, he rented a small workshop opposite the polyclinic at 11 Mariannengasse and set up his own factory in 1866.
With a visiting card from Professor Dr. Richard Hagen*, with handwritten annotations in brown ink in German, dated 1900, Leipzig. *Probably the Leipzig physician and university professor Ricahrd Hagen (1823-1908).
Traces of wear: headband and outside of box.
