Object description :

"18th Century Aubusson Tapestry, Pastoral Scene"
- This wool and silk tapestry represents a rural scene; a shepherd and a shepherdess seated on the left surrounded by sheep in the countryside. The couple seems animated by a conversation of tender glances which takes place in a setting made bucolic thanks to a composition mixing vegetation, waterways, minerals and architectural elements. This poetic scene offers the pleasure of an escape thanks to a very green landscape like a “greenery”.

- The Pastorale was one of the favorite themes of French Opera in the 17th century, before experiencing a decline at the end of the century and then finding new vigor with comic opera and the fashion of shepherdesses in the 18th century, and especially to associate itself more closely than ever with painting and garden art. The art of tapestry followed this fervor

- This tapestry is similar to two Aubusson tapestries presented in the work of Pascal-François Bertrand "Aubusson, Tapestries of Lights":

Fig 208, Couple of shepherds seated in a landscape. Bale House at the Kirshgarten. Page 169
Fig 211, Couple of shepherds sitting near a waterfall formerly in the stock of French and Co, New York. Page 170

- Dimensions: Length: 227 cm, Height: 202 cm

- Good state of conservation, some relay seams missing, fully lined, ring fastening system.
