17th century.
Oil painting on canvas.
Antique painted wooden frame, to be restored.
Relined.
Baroque era.
Interesting painting from the Genoese school, with the characteristic effect of the figure emerging from the oxen and dark background.
The painting comes from the property of a noble family in Venice.
The central figure, surrounded by a luminous aura, holds a book in his hand, a symbol of knowledge and spirituality. The background, with its hardness, creates a contrast that highlights the sacred figure. The vibrant colors of the dress give depth and vitality to the work.
At the beginning of the 17th century, Strozzi moved away from the artificial elegance of Luca Cambiaso's late mannerist style. Bernardo Strozzi made Genoese painting more naturalistic, with greater attention to realistic details.
The painting has had restorations and has abrasions on the paint layer.
We thank the art historian and colleague Wladyslaw Maximowicz for his generous contribution in attributing the painting to the Genoese school.
