Rare thermometer accompanied by a figurative bronze sculpture with black patina, from the 19th century. Thermometer with a blown glass fixed on a reed support, supported by a small character called “negro” and corresponds to the designation of origin designating objects of decorative art or decorative figurines of numerous objects of art to name a subject or character representing a slave from Africa or the West Indies, during the era of colonialism. The figure slightly inclined to hold in his hands a thermometer as tall as himself is barefoot, wearing a shirt, small pants and this type of hat which are the clothing characteristics of the slaves who worked in the fields under the colonialist empire. Sculptures and decorative objects on the theme of slavery or having slaves as subjects were very fashionable at this period and experienced great popularity which would last long after decolonization.
