Anacreon is one of the greatest Greek lyric poets. We see him here aged in an antique setting of Love on his knees. Anacreon being best known for his love poetry.
Joseph Leroy is a neo-classical painter, student of Joseph-Benoît Suvée, (1743 - 1807). Very influenced by neoclassical culture and by his master, he painted portraits and mythological subjects inspired by antiquity. He exhibited at the Salon from 1795 to 1827.
