"Low Relief Panel Carved In Solid Oak"
This sumptuous oak bas-relief from the end of the Renaissance period comes from Flanders. It was to constitute the upper part of a high quality dresser designed for a rich interior. It is in a very good state of conservation and consists of all its original parts, the base board alone having been added to make up for the absence of the lower body of the furniture. The main scene features six figures and a horse against a background of perspective architecture. The different plans are clearly indicated, the movement of the horse is lively. This main scene is treated in the center of a double frame. The first is composed of two caryatids dressed in antique drapery and holding two symbolic instruments, one of which is a compass. The second is made up of two terms of Fauns emerging from a console with lion heads and paws. The different parts are highlighted with palmette friezes. Richness and complexity of the decor, harmony of the layout, we are obviously dealing with a work from a major workshop.
