Gérard Jean GALLE (1788-1846) Pair of Empire period candlesticks Cast, chiseled and matt and shiny gilded bronze Paris, circa 1810-1820 H. 23.5; diameter 11.5 cm 8 cast iron elements This very rare pair of Empire - Restoration period torches signed by Gérard Jean Galle presents a richly sculpted decoration. The circular base has a foliage decoration alternating amati, glossy and matte backgrounds. The barrel, decorated with flutes, is topped with a mosaic of palm leaves. On the base, two characters stamped “GF” for Galle Fecit. This is the mark of the great and famous bronze maker Gérard Jean Galle (1788-1846), son and successor of Claude Galle, of whom we are also presenting another torch for sale. Gérard Jean Galle Eldest son of the great Claude GALLE, he took over the family business on rue de Vivienne upon the death of his father in 1815. He managed to maintain his father's reputation and he kept a prestigious clientele including the Duke of Richelieu , the Marquis de Martel and the Viscount de la Rochefoucauld. It is interesting to note that Gérard-Jean and his brother Jean-Auguste served in the army before completing their apprenticeship. In 1810, Claude Galle asked Napoleon to dismiss his son so that he could take over the family business. During the Restoration, Gérard-Jean GALLE won a silver medal at the Industry Exhibition for an exceptional collection of gilded bronze including lighting fixtures and clock cases. Condition report: Very good original condition, the gilding is still thick, very yellow with very beautiful shades of matte gold, amati and shiny gold. Note some small shocks at the base.
