Impressive slit gong drum called "garamut" collected in the village of Yamok, Sawos area in Papua New Guinea. The slit drum is mainly used as a means of communication, but can also be used to punctuate traditional ceremonies or "singsing". Exceptional, very large piece entirely carved with tribal designs evoking ancestors, totemic plants and animals. Stylized head evoking a pig, an animal symbol of prosperity throughout Melanesia. Very hard wood showing traces of use and age. Excellent sounds. Sold with a pair of drum sticks. Unique piece.
