"Manufacture Spode - Pair Of Cake Plates In Mandarin Porcelain And Gold - Circa 1820"
Pair of presentation plates, porcelain cake dishes, beautiful gilded decoration with fine gold interlacing, floral motifs and fleur-de-lis on a tangerine background. Both plates bear the Spode Feldspat Porcelain signature in pink, with the decor number 3932. The Spode factory is based in Stoke on Trent, England. Josiah Spode bought the factory in 1770 from the workshop of John Turner, the latter successfully copied the great French factories like Sèvres with success and talent. The manufacture of translucent organic porcelain called "bone china" did not begin until 1795. Around the same time, Spode formed a relationship with William Copeland, with whom he made porcelain quite similar to Chinese porcelain. The "Feldspat Porcelain" was created Josiah Spode II after 1821. Our plates date from this period, under the era of the Restoration in France. Diameter 21cm
