We find similar costumes in another watercolor by BOUDIN titled "Breton interior", sold by Christie's Paris on 04-14-2021, lot 10.
Two oil paintings created by Eugene BOUDIN depict winnowers in Quimper in Brittany (see comparative photos).
The watercolor bears at the bottom right the blue stamp EB from the after-death sale of BOUDIN from 1899 (referenced by Lugt under number 828).
This work has many advantages : the characters are large (nearly 15 cm high!) and well defined, which gives it very good readability and a superb decorative aspect, the colors have remained fresh and the paper has little defaults.
There are very few watercolors of this quality, often either unfinished, sketched or superimposed in places, or very insolated with bland colors, or presenting small characters that are barely visible.
An excellent opportunity to acquire one of the greatest French painters of the 19th century !
In a prestigious gallery located in Paris or London, such a watercolor would be priced around 25,000 euros !
Watercolor and pencil on paper
16 x 23 cms at sight (with frame, approximately 36 x 43 cms)
Stamp "EB" at the bottom right (Stamp from the after-death sale of BOUDIN in 1899, referenced Lugt 828)
Very good general condition, colors fresh, vertical connection of paper between the 1st and 2nd character on the right (2 sheets placed end to end), small stain at the bottom towards the left, tiny scattered stains and abrasions, very discreet horizontal fold in the middle on the left sheet, all these defects being anecdotal and listed only for the sake of completeness. Compared to the BOUDIN watercolors usually found on the market, often sun-stained and full of foxing, this watercolor is really in very good general condition.
