Object description :

"Varnished Earth Jug - Avignon (?), 17th Century"

Very rare JUG in glazed earthenware with brown glaze, baluster shape with molded pedestal, slightly flared neck with large central rod and profiled scrolling handle. The body is decorated with lots of “rice grains” patterns.
Height: 29.5 cm.
SOUTH-EAST OF FRANCE, (AVIGNON?), beginning of the 17th century.

An indistinct signature is engraved under the pedestal and inside the lid.
The lid has been restored, the hinge pin is missing and some chips and wear of the glaze are noted and visible on the photos.
A piece of the same type was sold at TAJAN, with the expertise of Cyrille Froissart on December 19, 2023, referenced 85 in the sales catalog. Bibliography:
“The art of glazed earth” Edition of the National Ceramic Museum, 2000
“The art of glazed earth from the Middle Ages to the year 2000” National Ceramic Museum and Arras Museum.
