"Dish Attributed To "
dish attributed to Thomas Victor Sergent around 1870 decorated with a lizard fish and snake and shells. Slight accident The achievements of Thomas Victor Sergent recall the importance of the figure of Bernard Palissy in the 19th century and the myth surrounding his work as a ceramist. After a series of experiments on colored enamels, Palissy specialized in polychrome enamel ceramics . A certain number of artists in Tours and then in Paris claim this tradition and revive the characters of this very particular ceramic that Palissy himself had designated under the name of “rustic figulines”. Thomas Victor Sergent, active between 1870 and 1885, participated in this craze and can be considered one of the three greatest Palissystists of the 19th century with Victor Barbizet (1805-1870) and Georges Pull (1810-1889). Sergent stands out for the technical quality of its hard and deep enamel which highlights bright and contrasting colors. He particularly appreciates bright cobalt blue. He uses molding more frequently than modeling. Often the two techniques coexist.
