River landscape animated with a market scene. Workshop of Jan Brueghel the Younger. 17th century. Oil on canvas Presented in a beautiful vigorously molded and blackened wooden frame. Framed size: 67 x 79 cm. The canvas alone: 40 x 51 cm Jan Brueghel the Younger is a Flemish Baroque painter born in 1601 and died in 1678. He is the son of Jan Brueghel the Elder, grandson of Pieter Brueghel the Elder and nephew of Pieter Brueghel the young. Around 1615, at the age of fourteen, he joined forces with his friend Antoine van Dyck, himself only sixteen years old, and they created their own workshop. His second son is the painter Abraham Brueghel (1631-1690). His work takes up the main subjects of his father, but his touch is more personal. In our painting, the painter describes with precision a scene from daily life dotted with anecdotal details which remind us that we are indeed in Flanders. It is a market, the villagers gather in the village square to sell animals, in this case cattle. Focusing on details, he fine-tunes the characters and the setting like a miniaturist. He particularly excels in indicating the succession of shots by the artifice of side screens and by a subtle and nuanced chromatism which, with him, is oriented towards tones predominantly blue, green and brown, but always soft and subtle. Testifying to an attentive observation of the animal world within a harmonious landscape, the painter displays a real quality of execution and a delicate naturalism. The recently cleaned painting has found a beautiful and bright original color palette. Sold with a certificate. Related work: Breughel, Jan the Elder (1568-1625) Village Scene.
