Josef Kriehüber (1800-1876) entered the Imperial Academy in Vienna at the tender age of 13. At 18, he became a drawing teacher in Poland under Prince Eustachy Sanguszko. Returning to Vienna in 1821, he developed a passion for lithography and began to paint portraits of Viennese society.
He notably portrayed Robert Schumann, Hector Berlioz, Franz Liszt, Emperor Ferdinand Maximilian of Austria and Marie Louise of Austria. His portraits were in great demand, and he enjoyed considerable success during his lifetime.
With the advent of photography, the number of commissions gradually dwindled, and he ended his life in a state of poverty.
Nonetheless, he remained an artist who captured the spirit of his models admirably, portraying them with a liveliness and clarity that we find again in the portrait we present.
