The myth of Diana and Actaeon, from Book III of Ovid's Metamorphoses, is a major source of inspiration. During a hunt, young Actaeon surprised the goddess Diana and her followers while bathing. He was punished for his curiosity, transformed into a deer before being devoured by his own dogs.
