Representation of a priest in beige ceramic
Mexico
Veracruz Culture, 450 – 750 AD.
The character is represented standing, arms and legs spread, the palm of the right hand turned towards the sky, the left palm facing the listener. It is adorned with two large collars, each decorated with a massive pectoral as well as three bells adorning the legs, the latter showing traces of chapopote (bitumen). He is dressed in a small loincloth tied at the waist with a belt, both signified by the pastillage technique. The disproportionately large oval face has lenticular eyes framing an eagle-beaked nose placed above a wide, half-open mouth with full lips. The elaborate hairstyle consists of a triple row of truncated conical elements evoking feathers and topped with a crest, the ears decorated with large tubular tambas (ear ornaments).
