George Armfield is a painter born and lived in London. He mainly dedicated himself to portraiture in the dog world, the numerous scenes have his favorite breed as the protagonist: Terriers intent on hunting wild prey from their dens, in particular wild rabbits and hares. There are also other breeds such as Spaniels and other sporting breeds used in hunting waterfowl, foxes, pheasants, badgers or large game such as deer.
George, to improve his artistic training, came to Italy, to Rome.
In 1839 he exhibited some works for the first time at the British Institution. The following year George's works were published in Sporting Magazine. In 1840 he began an artistic career, establishing himself as a Dog Painter, exhibited at the Royal Academy (from 1840 to 1862) and Suffolk Street Galleries until 1875. He was one of the artists who contributed most to the diffusion of the Animalier genre at a European level. His love for animals was well known, it is said that he spent hours and hours collecting them from life, in the stables, in the kennels or in nature. This total dedication is responsible for the accuracy and unique charm of his works. The clients belonged to English high society. His works were also highly sought after in the United States with the spread of Sporting Art collecting.
