"Becan (bernard Cahn Says) : “the Basque Village Cat”"
Bécan (Bernhard Cahn said) (1890-1943): “The cat from the Basque village”, oil on canvas cardboard 32 x 24 cm, mounted in a black painted frame 49 x 40 cm. Circa 1930. The Artist, better known as a poster artist and illustrator, had a brilliant and recognized career before his tragic end in 1943. His rare paintings describe a disappeared Basque Country, where humans only give the scale of the powerful Nature. Here, under a sky of overwhelming blue, a young Basque woman goes down to the fountain, perched on her head under the gaze of a black cat. The contrast between the white walls and the saturated hues of the composition, blue of the sky, intense green of the foliage or Basque red of the shutter, in opposition to the orange of the ground and the purple of the facade in the shadows, makes this work very cheerful and modern.
