ANTONIO BASOLI BOLOGNA-ITALY 1774-1848 PAINTER-ARCHITECT-ENGRAVOR-SCENOGRAPHER Italian neo-classical artist HEIR OF FRANCESCO PIRANESI ALCOVES ROMAN CIRCUS DRAWING-PEN-CHINESE INK-GREY WASH Circa 1820 38 cm X 53 cm Very good state of conservation SETTING OF LA SCALA DE MILAN Preparatory drawing from a background in which there were theater sets from Antonio Basoli's production. He worked as a set designer and curtain artist and was the decorator of several theaters such as the Teatro Marsigli-Rossi , the Teatro comunale di Bologna, as well as the Teatro Contavalli, where he worked most. Although most of his work has only survived through references in books listing his works in engraving, drawing, or watercolor, including the Collezione di varie scene teatrali, which was written in 1821, we are fortunate to be able to offer here a preparatory drawing of the theater decor of La Scala in Milan from a background of the works of Antonio Basoli. Indeed, in 1818, he traveled to Milan, where he discovered the Sala Sanquirico, workshop of the most eminent scenographers of La Scala, from whom he took inspiration for the decor of the opera Semiramide of 1820, the decor of a performance of 'Oedipus Rex at the Contavalli in 1822 and for the background paintings of the Teatro dei Cavalieri dell'Unione in Santarcangelo di Romagna the same year. During this same period, he worked notably on the Villa Marescalchi and the Palazzo Baciocchi (today the Palazzo Ranuzzi. SOLD WITH ITS CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY
