Object description :

"Portrait Of A Languid Spanish Woman, Oil On Canvas, Dated 1979 And Signed Alexandre-louis Leloir "
This painted panel measures 20cm by 32cm and its very beautiful period frame, with palemettes and gilded wood, measures 50cm by 61cm. Sold with a certificate of authenticity. This oil represents a young woman dressed in Spanish fashion, with her long black dress and yellow scarf. Her Iberian hairstyle is decorated with a rose. She stands languidly sheltered by a fan like a harem concubine. Here we find the refined and enchanting atmosphere of the painter Alexandre-Louis Leloir, whose canvas is marked with his signature and the date 1979. Student of his parents and his grandfather Alexandre Colin, Alexandre Louis Leloir entered in 1860 at the Beaux-Arts in Paris and tried several times to win the Prix de Rome. In 1861, he obtained a first second grand prize with La Mort de Priam (Guéret, Musée d'Art et d'Archéologie), then presented himself again in 1862, 1863, and again obtained a second grand prize in 1864 with his Homer in the island of Scyros (Colmar, Unterlinden museum). He also distinguished himself in the painted half-figure competition in 1864. Specializing in history painting and genre scenes, he participated in the Salon from 1863, with a Scene from the Massacre of the Innocents (Niort, Musée Bernard-d 'Agesci). His work La Lutte de Jacob avec l'Ange, presented at the Salon of 1865 and kept in Clermont-Ferrand at the Roger-Quilliot art museum, is an example of his virtuosity in the field of the great genre. From 1868, in the tradition of Ernest Meissonnier, he oriented his painting towards the genre scene, drawing his inspiration from medieval daily life, from the interiors of the Grand Siècle, in the Dutch manner, and from orientalist scenes. . He illustrated certain editions published by Damase Jouaust, and devoted himself to illustration on several occasions; he also participated in the founding of the Society of French Watercolorists in 1879. He was named Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1876.
