Object description :

"Large Mazarin Desk From Louis XIV Period Attributed To Nicolas Sageot"
A spectacular large mid-range Mazarin desk in Boulle marquetry with red scales and brass. It rests on eight console legs joined by two X-shaped spacers and finished with gilded bronze tops. It is inlaid on all sides with decorations of commedia dell'arte characters and fantastic animals in foliage scrollwork. The tray surrounded by a gilded brass ingot mold is trimmed with gilded black leather with small irons. It opens with five drawers on the front fitted with gilded bronze pull handles. Five simulated drawers appear on the back. This exceptional desk is attributed to the famous cabinetmaker Nicolas Sageot (1666-1731) who was strongly inspired in his marquetry work by the no less famous ornamentalist Jean Berain who developed for King Louis XIV an ornamental repertoire of great richness: the decor “à la Berain”.
