"Graphite Drawing Signed C. Gerval, Le Théâtre Lyrique De Paris, Théâtre De La Ville"
GERVAL, C. “Lyric Theater”. Lead pencil drawing. 13.5 x 14.5 cm at sight, in a frame of 29 x 34 cm. Signed lower left “C. Gerval” and located lower right. Pretty lively scene from the 19th century, with the Théâtre Lyrique de la Place du Châtelet (4th arrondissement), which was built between 1860 and 1862 by Gabriel Davioud, based on the model of the Théâtre du Châtelet facing it. The Lyric Theater was burned down and destroyed in 1871 during the Commune and rebuilt identically three years later. In 1875 it was renamed the Théâtre historique, then Théâtre des Nations, Théâtre Sarah Bernhardt, Théâtre de la Cité and today Théâtre de la Ville. Ref. A4-53
