"French School Circa 1820/30 : "exceptional Portrait Of A Man In A Coat""
French school circa 1820/30: “Portrait of a man in a coat”, oil on canvas 81 x 65 cm, mounted in a superb gilded frame 109 x 88 cm. A masterful restoration accompanied by re-lining has revealed the old repaintings which camouflaged the coat and the signature incised on the handle of the brush (L….). Still in the neo-classical vein, in his attitude he is already in the nascent romanticism: the collar wide open, barely tightened by a blue scarf which contrasts with the yellow jacket, the man closes his blue coat with one hand -night with black reverses. The face with its slightly aquiline nose, full of intelligence and kindness, makes me think of different personalities of the time: Victor Hugo, Ingres or Talma. This sumptuous portrait was probably published in engraving, so if an Internet user recognizes the author or the model, he will be entitled to my full gratitude.
