This enigmatic yet charming scene may have been attributed to Eugène Lami (1800-1890), as attested by a small label on the reverse of the frame. This is a very interesting possibility, even if there is no other evidence to support it. In fact, the play of colours and the light yet masterful execution are very reminiscent of this artist's world.
The subject, too - a gallant scene in front of an antique statue that is hard to place in history - is entirely typical of this artist. In any case, we are at the heart of the Romantic period and its artistic atmosphere.
