"Black Standing Mirror"
19th century, Tinted mirror, brass, cast iron base. Flat mirror screwed onto a tripod base, articulated in a brass bracket with two screws allowing tilting. This type of mirror was used in physics offices to study the reflection of light, sometimes as a microscopy accessory. Like Claude's mirror, this one helps accentuate depth and contrast. Traces of wear. Provenance: Casimir Cépède (1882-1954), biologist and zoologist.
