Original documents and procedures of the trial of Robert-François Damiens, First edition 1757 In-4 (254 x 190mm), Famous trial for regicide of Damiens, who attempted to assassinate Louis XV on January 5, 1757 The culprit, lackey at the Court and fervent believer, was arrested and subjected to the "question". He declared that he only wanted to give a warning to the king concerning the misery of the people. Transferred to the Conciergerie, he denounced certain parliamentarians as accomplices, then retracted. Parliament demanded a trial and his conviction although Louis XV granted him a pardon. The atrocious torture, detailed in this document, was inflicted on March 28, 1757 in front of a large crowd: right fist cut, flesh torn and burned, quartering of four horses which lasted for hours. The executioners will have to do it sixty times.
