Object description :

"Abbot Pierre Calès (1870-1961) "dauphiné Valley" Grésivaudan, Mountains, Hareux, Grenoble"
Pretty painting on cardboard by Abbot Pierre Calès which represents a view of the mountain and valley, signed and dated 45 engraved in the paste at the bottom right. Format of the painting 27x40.5cm It is therefore a beautiful post-impressionist composition by Pierre Calès, which as often represents a view of mountains and valley, most probably in the Dauphiné, perhaps the Grésivaudan valley; I think those in the know will recognize the place quite quickly. As usual he uses the knife technique, therefore rich in material, all in a palette of blues, mauves, pink, yellow, purple, green or brown. Calès' compositions are immediately recognizable thanks to his very particular touch. Jean-Pierre Calestroupat, better known under the name Abbé Calès, is a French painter, born in Vienna on August 31, 1870 and died in Tencin on October 15, 1961. At the age of 20 he was at the Rondeau minor seminary in Grenoble where he received the advice of Abbot Laurent Guétal, but without being influenced by him. It is Philippe Charlemagne, himself a student of Jean Achard, who will be his master. First appointed vicar in Rives, then parish priest in Hurtières, he arrived at the Tencin parish in 1902, and he would not leave it. The church square in Tencin. At the back in the center is the cure of Abbot Calès. He is known for his Dauphinois landscapes. His favorite subject is the Grésivaudan valley, which he painted throughout the seasons. His paintings are often panoramic, worked with a knife in thick strokes. He can be compared to the Impressionists or Post-Impressionists, but also to the Fauves by his exuberant colors. Several of his paintings are in the Grenoble museum alongside Guétal, Ravier, Hareux, etc. In his hometown of Vienne, in 1963, rue Pelletan was renamed rue abbé Pierre Calès. This painting is in fairly good condition, some stains cleaning might be necessary for purists, but it can also remain in this original condition, no missing or repainted.
