"Pair Of Vases With Cranes And Dragons, Arita, Japan, Meiji Era (1868-1912). "
Pair of large porcelain vases painted in cobalt underglaze. The main decorative motif is a hand-painted pattern of flying cranes. The base is further decorated with a floral frieze and wave pattern, and the spout with a dense frieze of dragons in the clouds. The appearance of the crane (Tsuru) in Japan is synonymous with good news, the crane being a symbol of longevity (according to legend, it lives 1,000 years), but also of wisdom, loyalty, knowledge and experience that she brings during her distant travels. It also symbolizes love and marital fidelity, as this species is monogamous and mates for life (crane symbols often adorn Japanese weddings).
Arita, Japan, Meiji era (1868-1912).
Height 46 cm.
The state of conservation of one of the vases is very good, that of the other is good, with a small chip on the edge of the base.
